The Ashborne Circus
Aura was the performer they adored, the one they would riot for. Her act was the people’s favorite. She was the illusion creator, spinning visions that captured hearts with effortless charm and grace.
But Aura had ambition. White-hot. The grand finale—the most breathtaking act of all—was the Fire-Rite. And it did not belong to her. It belonged to Katie.
Katie, her long-time rival, guarded the act fiercely. Her mentor, Wendie Seams, had vanished while performing it, and since then, Katie had protected every secret of the Fire-Rite as if her life depended on it. Aura, however, was in awe of it. She wanted it.
When Aura pleaded for a chance to try the act, Katie’s response was sharp, her voice dripping with scorn. “You touch my act, you die.” Aura was stunned by the bitterness in her voice, but her desire didn’t fade. If anything, it grew stronger.
That night, at 2 AM, Aura slipped out silently and made her way to the old tent where Katie’s ring was kept. The place was quiet, forgotten. Rusted bolts lined the ancient fire ring, and the name Wendie Seams was engraved along its edge.
Aura paused. For a brief moment, she stood in silence, respecting the performer who had disappeared chasing perfection. Then she stepped forward.
Her hands trembled as she set up the fuel lines. No safety. No spotter. Just her. She took a deep breath and ignited the flames.
They roared to life, rising nearly forty feet into the air. For a moment, it was perfect. But then came the kickback. Heat lashed out violently, grazing her forearm. She flinched, barely holding steady—but she didn’t stop. It worked. Aura had done it.
The next night, the tent was packed. The air buzzed with chatter as the audience waited eagerly. Aura stepped into the ring first.
Her illusions danced through the air—light bending, colors shifting, reality itself seeming to blur. The audience gasped, then erupted into applause as she bowed.
Then Katie entered. Dressed in blazing red, she looked every bit the master of the Fire-Rite. With practiced ease, she ignited the flames. They surged upward—strong, controlled, magnificent—licking the very top of the tent.
Perfect. Until it wasn’t.
The ring let out a sharp, unnatural screech. Katie had taken a shortcut. And then—the curtain caught fire. It wasn’t sabotage. It was an accident.
At first, the panic was quiet—a whisper. Then it grew. And in seconds, it became a shrill, unstoppable scream. The audience surged. Chaos broke loose.
Aura didn’t think. She moved. She lunged for the gas control and slammed it shut. Heat burst against her skin, burning, searing—but she didn’t stop. Grabbing a piece of her blue jacket, she smothered the flames creeping along the curtain. Then she saw Katie—frozen, shocked—and rushed forward, pulling her out of the burning ring.
Outside, the night air felt heavy. Katie slipped her arm into Aura’s, forcing a weak smile. For eleven long seconds, neither of them spoke.
“I just… wanted more money,” Katie admitted quietly. “I tried a last-minute trick. Listen, Aura… we can fix this. I’ll say you saved me during the act. We don’t have to mention the accident to the ringmaster.”
Aura slowly pulled her arm away. Her expression hardened.
“The moment you chose money over people’s trust and safety,” she said quietly, “you stopped being part of this circus. This place was built on trust. That’s why we perform. That’s why we survive.”
Without another word, Aura walked away.
The ringmaster listened. He saw the burns. He heard the truth. Katie was dismissed immediately.
The Ashborne Circus shut down for three months.
When it reopened, it was different. Safer. Stronger. The illusions were still breathtaking, the performances still magical. But now, more than anything, the circus stood for something greater—trust.
And because of that, it continued to thrive.
Message: Trust is what turns strangers into family and fear into safety. It is earned in silence, in actions, in truth. And yet, in a single moment of ego, it can be shattered beyond repair. So why do we choose pride over the very thing that makes us human?
